Assessment

At Northbourne School, assessment is integral to our commitment to Nurturing Excellence and ensuring that every pupil achieves their full potential. Our assessment practices are designed to provide accurate, reliable, and meaningful information about each child’s progress and attainment across all areas of learning.

Assessment is used to:

  • Inform planning and teaching to meet the needs of all learners.

  • Track and monitor individual and cohort progress over time.

  • Identify strengths, areas for development, and appropriate support or extension.

  • Provide clear, constructive feedback to pupils and parents.

We employ a range of formative (ongoing) and summative (periodic) assessment strategies to ensure a balanced understanding of pupil achievement. Teachers use evidence from observations, discussions, classwork, and formal assessments to make informed professional judgements.

Our approach to assessment reflects the school’s core values of Courage, Compassion, and Community. Pupils are encouraged to demonstrate courage by engaging confidently with challenges, compassion through respect and empathy in their learning interactions, and a strong sense of community by contributing positively to the success of others.

At Northbourne, assessment is not solely a measure of academic performance but a means of supporting holistic growth—empowering every learner to progress, achieve, and thrive.
